Mediants and Chromatic Mediants

Calculate chromatic mediants and chromatic submediants for any given scale

This is a simple python application for displaying chromatic mediants for any scale and key. It also has some audio examples in C Major and C Minor to demonstrate the effect of the various chromatic mediants

Original Triads Mediant Triad Submediant Triad Chromatic Mediants Chromatic Submediants
C E G (C Major)
D F A (D Minor)
E G B (E Minor)
F A C (F Major)
G B D (G Major)
A C E (A Minor)
B D F (B Diminished)
C E G (C Major)
E G B (E Minor) A C E (A Minor)
  • E G# B (E Major)
  • D# G A# (D# Major)
  • A C# E (A Major)
  • G# C D# (G# Major)

Below are some audio examples that transition from C Major root to the various Mediants and Chromatic Mediants. Please note that to demonstrate the concept, all examples are in C Major and will not change when other scales are selected

C Major to Mediant (C Major to E Minor)

C Major to Submediant (C Major to A Minor)

C Major to First Chromatic Mediant (C Major to E Major)

C Major to second Chromatic Mediant (C Major to Eb Major)

C Major to First Chromatic Submediant (C Major to A Major)

C Major to Second Chromatic Submediant (C Major to Ab Major)

Below are some audio examples that transition from C Minor root to the various Mediants and Chromatic Mediants. Please note that to demonstrate the concept, all examples are in C Minor and will not change when other scales are selected
